How to Measure Your Blood Pressure Correctly at Home

Most home readings are wrong — not because of the device, but because of the ten minutes before it.

How to Measure Your Blood Pressure Correctly at Home

Blood pressure moves throughout the day. That is normal. What matters for you and your doctor is the pattern across days and weeks — and a pattern is only useful if every reading was taken the same way.

Before you measure

Sit quietly for five minutes. No caffeine, smoking, or exercise in the previous 30 minutes. Empty your bladder. Remove tight clothing from the arm.

Position

Sit in a chair with back support, feet flat, legs uncrossed. Rest your arm on a table so the cuff is level with your heart. Palm up, arm relaxed.

Taking the reading

Press START and stay still. Do not talk. Let the cuff inflate and deflate on its own. Take two readings one minute apart and record both — or let the app do it.

Not a diagnosis

Home readings are for monitoring. Discuss unusual results with your physician and never change medication on your own.
